A low speed operation for a small DC motor can be achieved by the use of 3 or more diodes in series as shown by the figure below. When S1 is open the diodes are in series with the motor reducing the applied voltage. Any diode has a 0.6 V voltage fall. Using 1N4002 diodes the maximum current is 1 A.
