The opposition offered by an inductance to an AC current depends on the reactance value and also the AC frequency. The next formulas are used to calculate the inductive reactance (Xc).
Formula 1
XL = 2 x π x f x L
Where:
XL is the inductive reactance in ohm (Ω)
π = 3,1416
f is the frequency in hertz (Hz)
L is the inductance in henry (H)
Derivated formulas:
Formula 2
f = XL / (2 x π x L)
Formula 3
L = XL / (2 x π x f)
Application Example:
Through a 2 mH inductor flows a 100 mA sinewave current. Assiming that it is a pure inductance, calculate the inductive reactance.
Data:
L = 2 mH = 2 x 10-3 H
F = 100 Hz
XL = ?
Using formula 1:
XL = 2 x 3,14 x 100 x 10-3
XL = 0,628 ohm
Multiples and submultiples of the units can be used.
