In the figure we have a circuit of a dimmer for fluorescent lamps. The circuit is from documentation of the 80's. The capacitor can be changed as the grid is 110 V or 220 V, in order to obtain the full range of control. The capacitors must have insulation voltages according to the application or 400 V or more.
