This old oscillator using germanium transistors has a high impedance headphone as inductor to generate the signal. Transistors can be exchanged for silicon types like the BC558, but these need a slightly higher voltage to oscillate. The adjustment potentiometer can be 47 k ohms which is the current standard recommended value.
