One flip-flop of the 4018 can be used as a frequency divider or counter as shown here. Frequency dividers or counters are very useful in many applications involving instrumentation, clocks, and chronometers. Remember that a divide-by device can perform with successive divisions of the number broken down in integer factors. For instance, a divide-by-12 can be done by successive divisions by 2, 2, and 3 because 2 x 2 x 3 = 12. So, the next circuit can be combined to perform division by integers that can be divided into a group of numbers between 2 and 10.
