“I set up a small FM transmitter on your website. Can I operate it without a license?”

There are regulations for the operation of small transmitters, so that the emissions do not cause interference or problems in normal telecommunications services. One of the rules is to limit the power of the transmitters, usually to a few milliwatts, which leads us to an old term used to define this operation in the “home environment”. Some frequencies allow the use of small transmitters for short distance, for example, in the 27 MHz band or even in the FM band, in the case of wireless microphones, small intercoms and toys. A band around 42 MHz is also reserved for this type of operation. For high powers, there are restrictions as to the range and power used, requiring a license obtained from the FCC.
