I have some old devices that I want to keep so that they can remain in working condition even a few years from now. Do I need to switch them on constantly? What is the best procedure?
Electrolytic capacitors tend to deteriorate over time, especially when not in use, that is, without being in operation. Some manufacturers recommend that the devices be turned on at least every six months so that the electrolytes recover their insulation, which may be deteriorating. Others give a longer period, but it is important anyway that the device is switched on from time to time. And, of course, it influences how the device is stored. One suggestion is to use airtight packaging with a little silica gel (a sachet) to absorb moisture. If possible, a periodic inspection of the devices should be carried out in order to detect any leakage of components (electrolytic) or oxidation at critical points.
