Can I connect a 60W to 110V lamp in the 220V grid by placing a diode in series (1N4007?). It will only let half the half-cycles of the power supply pass through and the average voltage will be 110 V!
Theoretically it works if it was not a but. The moment you turn on the lamp the filament will be cold and with it its very low resistance. Thus, even with only half the half-cycles, the initial current will be much higher than expected with 110 V and this may cause the lamp to burn immediately.
